QUALITY CANNABIS

Whether you have a rad neighborhood dealer or you shop at the bougiest dispensary in town, have you given much thought to the quality of weed you’re consuming? Or the environmental and health resources it takes to grow indoor cannabis?

As 420 approaches, it’s time to give thought to sourcing the highest-quality cannabis we can, - because we deserve it, and so does mama earth. Let’s discuss three aspects of quality cannabis, and then please add to this list!

Quality Cannabis Is…

  1. Tested

  2. Outdoor grown

  3. Organic & living soil

  4. Regeneratively-farmed

  5. By an ethical, loving brand

  6. Tasty, dank, green, and fragrant

Let’s Look At Each One In Detail.

First and foremost, look for a farm or brand that puts an importance on testing for mold and the use of pesticides. If you’re in a legal state/country, this will probably be done for you, - one of the benefits of a regulated market.

Drying should be slow and controlled to prevent mold and preserve the terpenes and cannabinoids that give cannabis its aroma and flavor. Curing involves storing the dried cannabis in a controlled environment to allow for further degradation of chlorophyll and other unwanted compounds.

If you’re not in a regulated market, know that sometimes growers speed up the drying process for sooner financial gain, which can cause mold. We definitely do not want to smoke mold. Be sure you trust your source, and hire politicians fighting for legalization where you live.

Testing not only ensures there’s no junk being added to our cannabis, it also ensures we have access to accurate THC content, as false-advertising abounds.

Beyond testing, quality cannabis means naturally-grown, outdoors, under the sun and moon and stars, the way our ancestors evolved with it.

My favorite weed is sun-grown, on beautiful, heavy-metal-free land, with living soil that is full of the right nutrients, worms and bacteria – grown by farmers who practice sustainable growing practices without toxic pesticides (and even regenerative agriculture).

I love learning about no-til soil and using compost teas and companion plants instead of petroleum products. Farmers like @moonmadefarms even integrate lunar rhythms for optimal planting and harvesting conditions

When I’m in the States, and especially in California, organic and sun-grown weed is a requirement, and hopefully soon we can legally export some of this goodness, but in the meantime, those that live in places where outdoor-grown isn’t available, we can learn about more sustainable and healthy options than indoor, - such as greenhouse-grown.

Beyond testing and healthy growing and harvesting practices, look for growers and dispensaries who clearly have a true love of the plant (and aren’t only about the dollar signs of this booming industry).

Look for a sense of purpose behind their brand, or folks that leverage their corporate responsibility to shed light on sustainable farming.

And, Then, Of Course, - Look At The Cannabis.

Some signs of quality cannabis include a strong aroma, a dense and sticky texture, and a healthy green color. No mold, nothing weird, nothing added, just amazing medicine.

Happy 4/20 (whenever you might be reading this), - may you enjoy the dankest cannabis you can get!
