GANJA YOGI'S GUIDE TO DABBING

In recent years, cannabis consumption methods have evolved significantly, offering users a wide range of choices beyond the traditional joint or pipe. One such method gaining popularity is dabbing, which not only involves

vaporizing concentrated cannabis extracts, but is my ultimate favorite way to consume the plant.

Dabbing offers several benefits, including improved taste, an amazing head-high, and increased efficiency, but it also comes with its own set of tips and issues to consider, including being an intimidating way to partake.

Let’s look at the benefits and issues in detail, starting with the oh-so-yummy benefits!

Benefits Of Dabbing Cannabis

Enhanced Flavor:

No other method of consumption comes close to showcasing cannabis terpenes than dabbing. The superior taste is the result of  vaporizing concentrates at lower temperatures, so the terpenes and cannabinoids are preserved, resulting in a more flavorful experience compared to the combustion of dried flower.

Reduces Harmful Byproducts:

Dabbing produces fewer harmful byproducts than smoking. When cannabis is combusted, most of the healing terpenes get destroyed, while increasing the inhalation of tar and carbon monoxide. While cannabis smokers do not have higher levels of lung cancer, hot smoke of any kind has negative health effects for oour sensitive lung and throat tissues.

Cerebral High:

Dabbing delivers more of a head-high compared to smoking flower, great for helping me with my ADHD or just general focus, motivation, and creative ideation. Concentrates such as rosin, wax, shatter, or hash contain higher levels of THC (and, if rosin is used, a higher concentration of terpenes). This provides a more intense, focused and cerebral experience than smoking or edibles, which tend to be more of a body high. Some people experience dabbing as stronger, but this does not need to be the case, depending on the size and temperature of the dab.

Quick Onset:

Dabbing provides rapid onset, with users feeling the effects almost immediately. This quick action makes it a preferred method for medicinal users seeking fast relief from symptoms, and makes it easy to titrate (know how high we are).

Efficiency:

Dabbing is highly efficient since it requires smaller amounts of concentrate to achieve the desired effect. This means you can stretch your stash further, potentially saving you money in the long run.

Tips For A Great Dabbing Experience

1 Start Slow:

Dabbing can be quite intense, especially for beginners. Start with a small dab to gauge your tolerance and work your way up if necessary.

2 Use The High-Quality Equipment & Concentrates:

Invest in quality dabbing equipment, including a dab rig made of quartz crystal (I used American-made products to ensure the quartz really is quartz). Using low-quality metals and glass in our dab rigs can lead to off-gasses or cracked glass, not a good look. And, - use rosin if you are able to source it. Unlike distillates, rosin has all the original terpenes (See our blog on whole-plant medicines to learn more).

3 Low-Temp:

Temperature control is key to preserving the flavor and potency of your concentrates. Dab-enthusiasts online cite a preferred temperature around (378°C), but cite a range from 340–482°C.

The boiling point of THC has recently been predicted to be 417 °C (so close to 420 it hurts!), - but vaporization can occur at temperatures lower than this by the use of a “carb cap,” which locks in the heat so we don’t have to go as high with it.

Experiment with different temperatures to find your preferred range, knowing the consistency of the concentrate will dictate the temperature (thicker, harder concentrate will need a higher temperature).

4 Clean Your Equipment:

Regularly clean your dab rig and accessories to ensure a clean, smooth hit every time. Residue buildup can affect the taste and overall experience. Be fastidious in keeping your dab rig (and pipe, bong, and other accessories) super-clean, for lung health, taste, and … ‘cause you’re worth it!

Issues To Be Aware Of:

Last but not least, let’s discuss the possible pitfalls that come with dabbing. Many of them prevent people from getting into it, but they can be easily overcome. They are:

High Potency:

While the potency of concentrates is a benefit for many users, it can be overwhelming for newcomers. Exercise caution and know your limits, especially when starting out. Maybe your dab is ½ the size of a grain of (short grained) rice. Notice how it hits. You can always dab more, but you can never dab less, lol.

Equipment Costs:

High-quality dabbing equipment can be expensive upfront, but it's an investment in a more enjoyable and efficient cannabis experience. Do some research to see if an electronic or torch-style dab rig is right for you. I prefer the latter because they’re easier to keep clean (in my opinion). I use the Stache Rio Rig-in-one.

Safety Concerns:

Dabbing involves the use of torches and hot surfaces, which can pose safety risks if not used responsibly. Always follow safety guidelines and keep flammable materials away from your dabbing area. This becomes super-second-nature in time.

Tolerance Buildup:

Regular dabbing can lead to increased tolerance, requiring larger doses to achieve the same effect. Consider moderation to avoid this issue, sometimes use tinctures, sometimes smoke, sometimes use edibles, to avoid tolerance.

Intimidating To Use:

This is  the number one reason people don’t try dabbing, according to my super-scientific polls on IG Stories. This makes sense, but can also be easily overcome. Practice makes anything easier, and for the taste, mental clarity, and health properties, it’s worth overcoming any fears or feelings of being intimidated.

In Conclusion:

Dabbing cannabis offers a flavorful and efficient alternative to smoking flower. It provides a rapid onset of effects, delivers an exquisite head-high, enhances the taste, and allows for precise dosage control.

However, it's important to approach dabbing with care, especially if you're new to concentrates. By following the tips and being aware of the potential issues, you can enjoy a satisfying dabbing experience while minimizing any associated risks. You totally got this! (And, I swear, you will never look back). Enjoy.

APPRECIATE YOU!
